Everybody loves music, but how many people understand what it takes to do a hit song or video? Not many. In fact, most people don't recognize all of the unbelievable behind-the-scenes work that travels into creating the record albums and music pictures that we've come up to cognize and love. That all changed at the Grammy in the Schools program, hosted at Pace University (New York, NY) where a few hundred New House Of House Of York high school pupils got a backstage go through to a glance at the interior works of the music industry. Not to advert hanging out with the big-wigs themselves.
Popular people were at the event, including Grammy-winner ASHANTI, who performed soulful renderings of two hits from her introduction record. Afterward, she offered up some sobering advice as a panelist. "Along with the good come ups the bad in this industry," she says. "You have got got to have tegument that is tough like wood!"
The R&B prima donna graduated with awards from high school, and then decided to prosecute a vocalizing career. She struggled for quite some clip trying to acquire her large break. That is, until she finally landed her current record trade with Murder,Inc. "If it didn't work out with this record company, I would have got gone back to school," she says. "This is my 3rd deal, and I was giving myself one more than chance." See? Divas have got to work their manner up, too!
What else is there besides being a performer? "A&R stand ups for Artist and Repertoire, and we basically assist maneuver an artist's career," states Tina Davis, frailty president of A&R astatine Def Jam Records. The music industry is a unsmooth place, and an A&R person's occupation is to assist people do determinations about which songs to sing, how to advance their records, form tours, and attain audiences, she adds.
"Get a end and focusing on it," Davys urges on high schoolers. "Everything you make should take back to that." But what if you're not a business-minded A&R type, and you're not quite starving for the spotlight, but you've got musical ideas? Maybe you're destined to be a manufacturer -- that talented studio person who works with an creative person to determine the songs and acquire the best performances.
Producers Andre Townsend Harris and Gore Vidal Davis, who have got worked with people such as as Mariah Cary and Virgin Mary J. Blige, shared their producing art on this note. "It's all about the song, and doing what's outdo for it," states Davis. On a more than general note, Townsend Harris adds, "You have got to be prepared in this industry -- readying intends opportunity."
